Pumpkin Recipes, Crafts, and Activities Roundup

I love fall and its pumpkin-themed everything, scarves, and hot chocolate. We love going to the pumpkin patch with our family and eating kettle corn. I wish we were able to experience a real fall season, but I am afraid that in Southern California I consider it fall when it is no longer 100 degrees every day.

But that doesn't stop me from decorating with pumpkins and doing all the fall things. Here are some pumpkin-themed posts from my friends in the Social Fabric community.

Cats and Bats Halloween Party

This Cats and Bats Halloween Party is perfect with black and purple decorations

Halloween is this weekend and I loved putting together a Cats and Bats Halloween Party treat table.
We live in a neighborhood that is super busy and looks like a scene from Hocus Pocus. The kids thoroughly take over the neighborhood and our street for over two hours and it is so much fun.

This Cats and Bats Halloween Party is perfect with black and purple decorations

We love to sit on the porch and hand out candy since it is completely pointless to open and close the door a million times. We have also started inviting friends with kids over for pizza and treats while their kids can go trick-or-treating. This way, we can all enjoy some treats ourselves and it is an opportunity for cupcakes – so I am on board!

So now I just need to finish stockpiling candy for Halloween and figure out what I will wear. Should I be a DIY lion again or re-visit last year’s tavern maiden?

Mini Pinata Boo Kit

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser, MARS. All opinions are mine alone. #BOOItForward #CollectiveBias
This DIY Mini Pinata is the perfect BOO kit project to make for Halloween! Upcycle a tissue box into a fun BOO kit filled with candy and #BOOItForward #ad #CollectiveBias

Have you ever been BOO’d? Do you know what that is? Well, I think it is a super fun mixture of Secret Santa, Valentine’s Day, and ding dong ditching. Here’s how it works: you gather up fun supplies to create a BOO basket that is filled with candy and other fun treats and deliver it to a friend with a printable BOO card that you can download here. Then they have to BOO it Forward and BOO someone else.

I am always trying to inject a little fun and holiday decorations into the office; it is fun to decorate a corner of the break room and make festive treats for my co-workers. So I thought it would be fun to make some BOO kits for my co-workers to enjoy at their desks when the 3 o'clock sweet craving hits. - it shows no mercy.

This DIY Mini Pinata is the perfect BOO kit project to make for Halloween! Upcycle a tissue box into a fun BOO kit filled with candy and #BOOItForward #ad #CollectiveBias

Walmart has a huge selection of gift bags and party supplies, but instead of using the American Greetings® bags, I grabbed some tissue paper and decided I would make mini piñata BOO kits!

Mini Pinata Boo Kit Supplies:
  • Empty Tissue Box
  • Scissors
  • Adhesive
  • Paper Trimmer
  • Tissue Paper (I chose to match the Ghostbusters® colors of black and green)
  • Candy

Unfold your tissue paper and create one inch by six inch strips (one-inch-high and six inches long).

This DIY Mini Pinata is the perfect BOO kit project to make for Halloween! Upcycle a tissue box into a fun BOO kit filled with candy and #BOOItForward #ad #CollectiveBias

Create fringe on your tissue strip by cutting ¾ of the way up the strip. I found it was best to leave multiple layers of tissue together for the various cutting steps. Leave three strips unfringed.

Take your empty tissue box and add the unfringed tissue to the bottom of the box – this is so that the colors of the box don’t show through. Add your first row of fringed tissue paper all the way around the box. Repeat, working your way up the box and all the way around.

This DIY Mini Pinata is the perfect BOO kit project to make for Halloween! Upcycle a tissue box into a fun BOO kit filled with candy and #BOOItForward #ad #CollectiveBias

Transition to the other color if you would like – I love how the black and green reminds me of the slime from Ghostbusters®. Don't forget that you could include Ghostbusters® on DVD and Blu-Ray as part of your BOO kit as well. Or watch a digital copy of Ghostbusters® on VUDU.

Fill your mini piñata BOO kit with assorted candy. I love the MARS chocolate favorites and Nut and Caramel Favorites; they include SNICKERS® Fun Size,  M&M’S® Fun Size, TWIX® Fun Size, Skittles® Original Fun Size, and Starburst® Fun Size.

I like to start shopping for Halloween candy early so I can use coupons and rebates along with the great prices at Walmart. BOO kits, Trick-orTreaters, and candy for myself, of course.

Now it is time to seal the BOO kits closed.

Cut a square of tissue paper the size of the tissue box and glue down with adhesive.

I wanted to make sure everyone knew there was a treat inside, so I wrote “Break Here” on the center of the cover.

A quick punch and your BOO kit is ready to be enjoyed! Or, you can have a traditional piñata smashing if you’re in the mood.

Travel Themed Party & Tablescape

A beautiful Travel Themed Party & Tablescape is perfect for a going away party or a retirement party. #WhatInconvenience #CollectiveBias #ad

Seeing the world has always been something I have wanted to do and now I am getting the chance with Houston. We have been to Italy and Turks and Caicos for our honeymoon and right now we are working on planning our next big adventure.

This travel themed party would be perfect for a party for a friend who loves to travel, a college student leaving to study abroad, or a retirement “bucket list” party.

A beautiful Travel Themed Party & Tablescape is perfect for a going away party or a retirement party. #WhatInconvenience #CollectiveBias #ad

Versatile party themed are my favorite and I love when the supplies are easily accessible to pull everything together.

Travel Themed Party Supplies:

  • Vintage Suitcases
  • Cakestands
  • Jars, bowls, glasses – for snacks
  • Printed map scrapbook paper
  • Glue and tape
  • Journals or photo albums - they make great gifts, guest books, and travel souvenirs
  • Globe

Layer in travel themed snacks: pretzels, popcorn, peanuts; and some treats as well. It isn't a party without cupcakes and cookies. I picked up almost everything I needed in one trip to Walmart; including the cute brown photo album that I noticed as I walked by the stationary aisle.

I used printed map scrapbook paper to make cupcake wrappers, water bottle wraps, the "Bon Voyage" letters, and treat cup wraps. Just adding some fun patterned paper instantly makes everything more cohesive and my theme really came to life.

When Houston and I started dating I had only been on an airplane a handful of times and I was a habitual over-packer. Now I have simplified my packing and that includes my carry-on bag of flying essentials: chapstick, chewing gum (for when my ears pop), a cozy pair of socks, bandages, and Advil. Like I have mentioned before, I am the bag lady and err on the side of being overly prepared rather than under prepared.

Did you know I was once a ballerina? True story. All that dancing left me with a bad left hip that acts up every once in a while and sitting on an airplane for an extended period of time can make me terribly uncomfortable - especially when I get sandwiched in the middle seat. That's why I include Advil in my travel bag; it helps with my joint pain and I can get back to our adventures. Advil: Nothing's proven stronger on Arthritis and other joint pain.* Plus, you never know when someone else might need some; hence my bag lady status.

The EZ-open cap is perfect for people struggling with Arthritis, or people sandwiched in the middle seat on an airplane, and today is World Arthritis Day.  The medicine in Advil is the one doctors recommend most for joint pain. More than the medicine in Tylenol or Aleve.** Don't let joint pain keep you from crossing things off your bucket list and living life to the fullest.

I created my “Hello Adventure” travel bag using a small canvas bag and an iron on I designed using my Silhouette. I downloaded this design from Jenny Highsmith (I adore her hand lettering) and added it to my project.

To print iron-on transfers, you print the design backwards so that when you iron it, the design will be facing the correct direction. Be sure to select “iron-on paper” when you get ready to cut. Once my design was cut out, I peeled away the excess gold and then ironed on the design.

Now I have the perfect travel essentials bag for all my travelling essentials and it would also make a great party favor for your travel party guests.

Game Day Cupcakes

Last weekend I made cupcakes for a fun football snack and it was the perfect excuse to break out my new Wilton frosting kit to make some Game Day Cupcakes.

Game Day Cupcakes that you can make with any team colors #foodiefootballfans

First of all, not all projects come out the way you plan and that is totally ok. I wanted my cupcakes and frosting to be a dark blue to match my team's color but no matter how much blue food coloring I added, I couldn't get the color dark enough. Then I overcooked my batch of white cake cupcakes. That's when you decorate the cupcakes, watch everyone eat them without hesitation, and let go of the need for perfection.

Game Day Cupcakes that you can make with any team colors #foodiefootballfans

I had a blast trying different decorating tips and making homemade buttercream frosting.

Homemade Buttercream Frosting

Ingredients:
2 cups softened unsalted butter
4 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
1 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. salt

Directions:
Combine butter, salt, and vanilla and mix until stiff
Add powdered sugar one cup at a time - careful, it will get messy if you add it too fast
Mix well on high speed
Add whipping cream to the mixture and continue to mix until fluffy

Makes frosting for approximately 20 cupcakes.

I dyed some of the frosting blue and used my new Wilton 1M Star Tip to decorate and then added a football pick.

I will work on perfecting my food coloring skills before the SuperBowl so I can present the perfect blue team cupcakes. What color would you dye your cupcakes and frosting?

What Fits Inside A Missy JoTotes Camera Bag

I have a lot of nicknames. But the one that really defines me is what my co-workers call me: The bag lady.

What fits inside my Mint Missy Camera Bag from JoTotes. Click here to see how much I can fit in this awesome camera bag!
At any given time I have a minimum of two bags with me. I carry my purse, lunch bag, my gym bag, and school work. That doesn't include the times I also carry my camera laptop or a million other things with me. It is pretty funny to see me load and unload my car every day, but I just hate needing something throughout the day and realizing it is at home. I carry a lot of stuff with me, but you better believe that I am always the one to come through in a pinch when a friend needs something.

I had been pining over the Beautiful camera bags from JoTotes for months. I have had the Missy bag on my wish list on Pinterest for over a year but just couldn’t spend the money on it when there was wedding stuff to pay for.

I was so excited when my sweet husband surprised me with a gift card to buy my favorite bag. I scolded him for the extra splurge, but inside I was positively giddy. It took me over a month to decide which one I really wanted and I settled on the Missy bag in mint. I was so shocked at how quickly it arrived and when did cartwheels when I opened the package. It's about the size of my regular handbag (I told you I was the bag lady) so it's not obnoxiously big like some other camera bags I was looking at.

I was obsessed with looking at other bloggers posts that showed their Missy JoTotes (to visualize size) and what they were able to pack inside of it, but I thought I would break down just how much stuff I can fit in this bag, with space to spare!

Camera body
Lens
External flash
Wallet
Cell phone
Pens
Makeup bag
Surface Pro 2 laptop
Blogging Planner (you can print this for free here)
Sunglasses
Emergency toiletry bag – not pictured (hey, a girl has to be prepared)

That still leaves 2 internal zippered pockets practically empty, an empty front flap pocket, and the zippered pocket on the back of the bag.

When I say I can cram a lot of stuff into this bag, I am not fooling around. I also frequently take an extra battery pack with me and it slides in next to the external flash easily.

I love that the bottom of the bag as feet to protect the bag when I have to set it down on the ground or under my desk at work.

If you would like to see the size of the bag, I have two great examples for you:

Amy showed off her black Missy Jo Tote and a fun mural wall in a style shoot. Click here.

Laura has the brown Missy Jo Tote and did her own post about what she packs in her bag - clearly she is not nearly as big of a hoarder as I am. Click here.

Well, that's all three colors that are available; black, brown, and the mint Missy camera bags from JoTotes. Which one would you pick?

Tell me in the comments!

This post is not sponsored - I just really love my new camera bag!
