Black and Gold New Year's Eve Party

2016 has gone by in a flash and now it is time to throw a glitzy Black and Gold New Year’s Eve Party!

Click here for a quick and easy Gold and Black New Year's Eve Party I created on a budget!

I don’t know about you, but I feel like I blinked and the holidays were gone. Read: I didn’t get to eat enough cookies.

When I saw the fabulous New Year’s Eve Party supplies in the dollar section at Target, I just had to put together a black and gold dessert table to ring in the New Year.

I love a good bargain and Target’s seasonal decorations have been on point. Going into Target for a single item (I am looking at you, hairspray) is practically impossible without a stroll through the dollar section. They make it so easy with all the coordinating items to pull together a party table quickly and on a budget – both wins in my book.

Just buy or bake some cupcakes, add some edible gold stars to chocolate dipped cookies (see this post on how to dip cookies), and set up your dollar spot haul.

I like to make my tables have various heights by stacking cake stands (yes, I need an intervention) and using decorations from front to back.

So where will you be celebrating New Year’s Eve?

Wishing you a happy New Year, friends.  Thank you so much for being here and supporting Polka Dotted Blue Jay; every comment, click, and follow means the world to me.

Buffalo Plaid and Poinsettia Bridal Shower

The Fab 5 had our fourth quarter gathering two weekends ago and four of us were in on a secret: we planned a surprise Buffalo Plaid and Poinsettia Bridal Shower for Alisha!

Now, I must admit that I had very little to do with the planning stage of the party. I was sick for two weeks and my contributions to the party prep were my thumbs-up emoji texts to the other girls as they planned, purchased, and prepped everything. Thanks girls!

Plan a surprise Buffalo Plaid and Poinsettia Bridal Shower with a fun Hot Cocoa Bar

Shauna and Brittany basically stalked the dollar section at Target to find enough of everything; no one store had enough to make a complete set and table setting. The girls persevered and found everything we needed to make the table look fabulous! Shauna designed the tablescape, using scarves as a table runner, poinsettia napkin rings, black linens, and gold chargers.

What I did contribute was a whole bunch of plates, cake stands, and glassware for our setup. I also helped set everything up the day of and had a blast creating the hot chocolate bar. I filled my Wayfair mini trifle bowls with various cocoa toppings:  chocolate chips, marshmallows, candy canes, and coconut shavings. We also filled a large jar with the cocoa powder and added a beautiful framed printable that Leah made.

Then, to my surprise, Brittany arrived with homemade macaroons. Seriously, I am surrounded by talented women.

Alisha was very surprised – especially when I asked her to stop and pick up ice so we could make sure everything was finished before she arrived.

It has been hard for me to deal with the reality that we are all in very different places than we were seven years ago. Marriages, babies (for some), relocating, and time generally moving faster than we would all like. I cherish the three or four times a year we can all get together for a couple hours and connect face-to-face.

DIY Christmas Bucket

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #LoveAmericanHome #cbias #CollectiveBias

I have always loved gifting cookies during the holidays. Neighbors, co-workers, the fire department, everyone gets cookies from me and each year I try to come up with a new way to package the cookies and create a beautiful and delicious gift.

This year I grabbed one of my favorite supplies to make my cookie present: a plastic craft paint can. It is the perfect way to package my cookies and decorate with festive holiday accessories. I planned my DIY Christmas bucket to include some cookies and a fun Christmas gift with festive ribbons and bows.

I made some sugar cookies and then dressed them up with some red melting chocolate and some Christmas sprinkles. I dipped some in the chocolate and then drizzled the chocolate on some others.

While I am baking I love to have an American Home™ by Yankee Candle® Brand candle on the kitchen counter; with all the baked goods fragrances, they instantly get me in the holiday spirit and in the mood to bake a couple dozen cookies. *Always burn your candle on a heat resistant surface, keep it out of drafts and NEVER leave it unattended while lit. The American Home™ by Yankee Candle® Brand candles are long lasting with aromatic impact and my kitchen smells like cupcakes and cookies long after the real ones have been packaged and delivered to friends. I also thought they would make a great addition to my Christmas cookie package, so I picked up some extra ones while I was at Walmart.

I downloaded a fun design from the Silhouette Design store and used some vinyl to decorate the front of the bucket with a “Baked with Love” graphic.

Supplies:
Plastic Paint Bucket
Craft cutter (I used a Silhouette Portrait)
Baked with Love” graphic
Adhesive Vinyl and Transfer Paper
Ribbon and Bows
Cookies
Your favorite American Home™ by Yankee Candle® Brand candle
Festive Tag

Instructions:
1. Download your design and arrange the way you would like it to look (I made “with” larger for my bucket).
2. Create your vinyl cut out (don’t cut through both layers like I did – oops!)

3. Use your transfer paper to attach the design to the front of the plastic bucket.

4. Fill the bucket with decorative paper, Christmas cookies, and an American Home™ by Yankee Candle® Brand candle.
5. Tie ribbon to the handle of the bucket for extra Christmas cheer.

Blue and Silver Hanukkah Party

Need some inspiration for a Nights of Lights Hanukkah Party? Click here to see how to assemble an easy silver and blue Hanukkah Party with Crated.

Nights of Lights Hanukkah Party

Do you celebrate Hanukkah at your house? We have a nephew and a niece that are half Jewish and I loved the idea of setting up a blue and silver Hanukkah party table for them.

Need some inspiration for a Nights of Lights Hanukkah Party? Click here to see how to assemble an easy silver and blue Hanukkah Party with Crated.

I partnered with Crated to create a fun and festive table. They have updated their Hues of Blue party crate specifically for Hanukkah with some printables for your table; party invitations, an 8x10 printable, graphics for the pinwheel cupcake toppers, and wraps for water bottles.

I love Crated and how easy they make it to plan a party in a snap; just pick your party color or theme, select how many party attendees you’re having, and order. The box arrives with everything you need for a festive party, just add the food or dessert.

I made some cupcakes with my homemade buttercream frosting for the treat cups and I also picked up some festive silver and blue chocolate candies - lucky for me, the bag was already the colors I needed.

Fall Leaf Craft For Kids

This fall leaf craft for kids is perfect for children of all ages and gives the opportunity to work on dexterity, counting, and pattern skills.
I love to come up with seasonal craft projects that also serve as learning opportunities for elementary-aged children and I could hardly wait to make this fall leaf craft for kids.

When I was a little girl, I dreamed about growing up and being a teacher. I absolutely loved school (before math got really challenging) and thought that being a teacher had to be the most amazing job in the world. In fact, I originally listed Liberal Arts as my major when I finally started college.

Well, some real-world experience teaching kiddos quickly told me I wasn’t cut out for the 5 days a week gig teaching subjects I didn’t like. Now, if every day could be craft day, I would have been set.

M&M’s always has festive candies for the holidays and I couldn’t resist grabbing a bag of the fall colored ones to fill my entryway candy corn dish – in classic milk chocolate, of course.

I created a simple outline of a leaf on my computer and printed it on some orange craft paper.

This fall leaf craft for kids is perfect for children of all ages and gives the opportunity to work on dexterity, counting, and pattern skills.

The candy can be glued down to make a permanent fall project, or just placed on the paper over and over again. Children (and craft-loving adults) can work on dexterity skills; putting the M&M’s close to each other and on the lines of the leaf.

This fall leaf craft for kids is perfect for children of all ages and gives the opportunity to work on dexterity, counting, and pattern skills.

This is also a great activity for teaching and recognizing patterns for older children; my leaf followed a brown, yellow, and red pattern all the way around.

I would love to hear how you would use this project this fall in the comments!

Tips for Saving on Travel and Memories

This is a sponsored post for Groupon. All opinions are always my own.

If you’ve been following along for a while, you know I finally finished my bachelor’s degree! I can’t tell you what a huge relief it has been not having homework for the past two months; I have only freaked out and thought I forgot a homework assignment a couple times – it is hard to break a 7-year homework routine.

If you love to travel and make photo albums of your adventures, click here for some tips on saving money on both of them with Groupon Coupons! #GrouponCoupons #ad

So now I’m off to new adventures and filling up all my new found freedom with some of the things I love! At the top of the list: naps, craft projects, catch up on my photo albums and traveling.

I have been a scrapbooker since my Gram showed me my baby album as a little girl – I was hooked on photos and paper crafting instantly. I have dozens of scrapbooks and some half-finished ones too. I’ve reached the point where I just can’t keep up with them, partially because my sisters have made me an Auntie six times, and I have transitioned to Shutterfly photo books.

I’ve made albums for my girlfriends’ weddings, babies, a baseball album for the husband’s team, and our travel adventures. The Shutterfly price is so much less than I would have spent creating a traditional scrapbook and the process is so much faster! I also never finalize my purchase without looking for extra coupons and discounts; Groupon Coupons is my go-to place for finding some extra savings on my order.

I also use Groupon Coupons for Tripadvisor – my favorite website for researching and booking our hotels and travels. The reviews are so detailed and I love being able to ask my fellow travelers for advice.

Tripadvisor helps me create the travel and then I can preserve the memories from the trip in a Shutterfly photo book. All while saving money with Groupon Coupons. Sounds like a win to me!

Are you a scrapbooker too? What do you do with your photos? Tell me in the comments.

Pumpkin Recipes, Crafts, and Activities Roundup

I love fall and its pumpkin-themed everything, scarves, and hot chocolate. We love going to the pumpkin patch with our family and eating kettle corn. I wish we were able to experience a real fall season, but I am afraid that in Southern California I consider it fall when it is no longer 100 degrees every day.

But that doesn't stop me from decorating with pumpkins and doing all the fall things. Here are some pumpkin-themed posts from my friends in the Social Fabric community.

Cats and Bats Halloween Party

This Cats and Bats Halloween Party is perfect with black and purple decorations

Halloween is this weekend and I loved putting together a Cats and Bats Halloween Party treat table.
We live in a neighborhood that is super busy and looks like a scene from Hocus Pocus. The kids thoroughly take over the neighborhood and our street for over two hours and it is so much fun.

This Cats and Bats Halloween Party is perfect with black and purple decorations

This Cats and Bats Halloween Party is perfect with black and purple decorations

We love to sit on the porch and hand out candy since it is completely pointless to open and close the door a million times. We have also started inviting friends with kids over for pizza and treats while their kids can go trick-or-treating. This way, we can all enjoy some treats ourselves and it is an opportunity for cupcakes – so I am on board!

So now I just need to finish stockpiling candy for Halloween and figure out what I will wear. Should I be a DIY lion again or re-visit last year’s tavern maiden?

Mini Pinata Boo Kit

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser, MARS. All opinions are mine alone. #BOOItForward #CollectiveBias
This DIY Mini Pinata is the perfect BOO kit project to make for Halloween! Upcycle a tissue box into a fun BOO kit filled with candy and #BOOItForward #ad #CollectiveBias

Have you ever been BOO’d? Do you know what that is? Well, I think it is a super fun mixture of Secret Santa, Valentine’s Day, and ding dong ditching. Here’s how it works: you gather up fun supplies to create a BOO basket that is filled with candy and other fun treats and deliver it to a friend with a printable BOO card that you can download here. Then they have to BOO it Forward and BOO someone else.

I am always trying to inject a little fun and holiday decorations into the office; it is fun to decorate a corner of the break room and make festive treats for my co-workers. So I thought it would be fun to make some BOO kits for my co-workers to enjoy at their desks when the 3 o'clock sweet craving hits. - it shows no mercy.

This DIY Mini Pinata is the perfect BOO kit project to make for Halloween! Upcycle a tissue box into a fun BOO kit filled with candy and #BOOItForward #ad #CollectiveBias

Walmart has a huge selection of gift bags and party supplies, but instead of using the American Greetings® bags, I grabbed some tissue paper and decided I would make mini piñata BOO kits!

Mini Pinata Boo Kit Supplies:
  • Empty Tissue Box
  • Scissors
  • Adhesive
  • Paper Trimmer
  • Tissue Paper (I chose to match the Ghostbusters® colors of black and green)
  • Candy
This DIY Mini Pinata is the perfect BOO kit project to make for Halloween! Upcycle a tissue box into a fun BOO kit filled with candy and #BOOItForward #ad #CollectiveBias

Unfold your tissue paper and create one inch by six inch strips (one-inch-high and six inches long).

This DIY Mini Pinata is the perfect BOO kit project to make for Halloween! Upcycle a tissue box into a fun BOO kit filled with candy and #BOOItForward #ad #CollectiveBias

Create fringe on your tissue strip by cutting ¾ of the way up the strip. I found it was best to leave multiple layers of tissue together for the various cutting steps. Leave three strips unfringed.

This DIY Mini Pinata is the perfect BOO kit project to make for Halloween! Upcycle a tissue box into a fun BOO kit filled with candy and #BOOItForward #ad #CollectiveBias

Take your empty tissue box and add the unfringed tissue to the bottom of the box – this is so that the colors of the box don’t show through. Add your first row of fringed tissue paper all the way around the box. Repeat, working your way up the box and all the way around.

This DIY Mini Pinata is the perfect BOO kit project to make for Halloween! Upcycle a tissue box into a fun BOO kit filled with candy and #BOOItForward #ad #CollectiveBias

Transition to the other color if you would like – I love how the black and green reminds me of the slime from Ghostbusters®. Don't forget that you could include Ghostbusters® on DVD and Blu-Ray as part of your BOO kit as well. Or watch a digital copy of Ghostbusters® on VUDU.

Fill your mini piñata BOO kit with assorted candy. I love the MARS chocolate favorites and Nut and Caramel Favorites; they include SNICKERS® Fun Size,  M&M’S® Fun Size, TWIX® Fun Size, Skittles® Original Fun Size, and Starburst® Fun Size.

I like to start shopping for Halloween candy early so I can use coupons and rebates along with the great prices at Walmart. BOO kits, Trick-orTreaters, and candy for myself, of course.

Now it is time to seal the BOO kits closed.

This DIY Mini Pinata is the perfect BOO kit project to make for Halloween! Upcycle a tissue box into a fun BOO kit filled with candy and #BOOItForward #ad #CollectiveBias

This DIY Mini Pinata is the perfect BOO kit project to make for Halloween! Upcycle a tissue box into a fun BOO kit filled with candy and #BOOItForward #ad #CollectiveBias

Cut a square of tissue paper the size of the tissue box and glue down with adhesive.

This DIY Mini Pinata is the perfect BOO kit project to make for Halloween! Upcycle a tissue box into a fun BOO kit filled with candy and #BOOItForward #ad #CollectiveBias

I wanted to make sure everyone knew there was a treat inside, so I wrote “Break Here” on the center of the cover.

This DIY Mini Pinata is the perfect BOO kit project to make for Halloween! Upcycle a tissue box into a fun BOO kit filled with candy and #BOOItForward #ad #CollectiveBias

A quick punch and your BOO kit is ready to be enjoyed! Or, you can have a traditional piñata smashing if you’re in the mood.
